1. “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy”

This 2011 Cold War thriller features the direction of Tomas Alfredson and stars Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, and Tom Hardy. It’s a twisty adventure that involves British Intelligence, betrayal, rogue agents, and much more. If you are looking for an intricate tale of double agents and national security, this Oscar-nominated film is sure to satisfy you. You can watch it on Starz with Prime Video channels. 

2. “Mission: Impossible”

With eight films in the can, the Mission Impossible universe grows ever larger and provides plenty of action-packed secret agent charm. Helmed by Tom Cruise, the series is based on Bruce Geller’s 1966 TV series. Cruise’s Ethan Hunt is said to be a little more “realistic” than James Bond, but there’s still plenty of action to keep you entertained. All eight movies are available for streaming on Paramount +.

3.  Jack Reacher

Another Tom Cruise-fronted secret agent movie? What can we say? He’s really good at these kinds of thrillers! He’s an ex-Army investigator who gets involved in a mass shooting case in this movie, and it brings all the intrigue and car chases you could want. It’s available for streaming on Paramount +.

4. “The Bourne Identity”

This 2002 film starring Matt Damon is action-packed from start to finish. Damon’s character wakes up in a fishing boat with amnesia and has to piece his life back together while enemies he doesn’t remember are trying to kill him. While some of the sequel films in this series may not have great reviews, this first movie was very well-received and won several awards for editing and stunts. 

5. “Kingsman: The Secret Service”

This movie series is also based on the British secret intelligence service, but it’s kind of cranked up to 11. Rated R, this movie features more violence, cursing, and dirty humor while also taking some very loving shots at the Bond movies. It’s available to stream on (HBO) Max. 

6. Salt

Tired of male leads in your spy movies? Try this one on for size. Angelina Jolie stars in this 100-minute-long action film as a CIA agent accused of being a Russian spy. If you’re looking for something true to life, this may disappoint you, but if you’re looking for a fun, action-packed ride, check this out! It’s available to stream on Netflix. 

7. Notorious

And now for something vintage! In this 1946 Alfred Hitchcock film, Cary Grant and Ingrid Berman star. Berman stars as the daughter of a convicted Nazi spy who American agents ask to gather information on a ring of Nazi scientists in South America. 

8. Red Sparrow

Jennifer Lawrence dazzles in this gripping 2018 spy drama, playing a Russian operative whose mission is to entangle a rookie CIA agent deep within the intricate web of Russian espionage. Adapted from Jason Matthews’ riveting novel, the film plunges viewers into a high-stakes game of seduction, loyalty, and deception.

9. The 355

The 355 is a 2022 American action spy thriller movie that Theresa Rebeck and Simon Kinberg wrote. It is packed with stars, featuring Jessica Chastain, Penelope Cruz, Bingbing Fan, Diane Kruger, and Lupita Nyong’o. It’s available to stream on Starz or Hulu. 

10. La Femme Nikita

This 1990 action film, directed by Luc Besson (who directed the cult classic The Fifth Element), features a felon played by Anne Parillaud, who, instead of being sent to jail, is trained as a government agent and assassin. If you like this movie, it’s spawned several remakes and TV series as well.
