There are plenty of reasons why a part-time job might be your best option for a little extra cash. Maybe you are going to school and only have limited time between homework and sleep to fit in a few hours of working. Maybe you need something on the side to supplement your income. Perhaps you just need a reason to get out of the house, but the idea of a 40-hour-a-week commitment isn’t your cup of tea.

Part-Time Jobs Worth Your Time

One of the biggest reasons is to gain some level of experience to get the job you want by doing something else as a stepping stone. Full-time work and jobs that pay well are often only available to people who have been in the trenches and have a history of efficiency, consistency, and professionalism. Believe it or not, working part-time can give you all of that and more.

Is it time to strike out and find your purpose? Maybe one of these part-time gigs will get you further down the path to recognizing your true potential.

Food Service

It’s a humble way to dive into the working world, and most of us have done it, so put your pride away and embrace it. You can usually get a fast food job at the typical staple franchises like McDonald’s with no experience, but if you want to go a little more upscale, washing dishes, bussing tables, and expediting orders at restaurants like Applebee’s or Texas Roadhouse are open to you.

Healthcare

Someday you want to work in a hospital, maybe even go to medical school. Working in a health facility is a good place to start. Retirement homes, long-term care facilities, and in-home hospices often open their rosters to new blood who really wants to take care of people. One big upside of this job is the myriad of experiences you will be sure to have, and the pay isn’t terrible.

Delivery Driver

During the pandemic, delivery driver jobs exploded in markets previously underutilized. Delivery drivers not only brought food to sheltered customers but medication, packages, and even alcohol. Everything was open with very few restrictions and that hasn’t changed. Younger part-time workers will be limited to what they can deliver, but for those over 21, any business aligned with a major delivery app is on the table.

One of the better-paying part-time jobs many struggling folk have taken is as an independent chauffeur. The freedom to work when you want, where you want, choose your riders or reject them, and get paid daily, gives part-timers the freedom they want without a hovering boss breathing down their neck. Drive your vehicle, be personable, and of course, get the rider from A to B safely and efficiently. Pretty simple.

Stocking Clerk

Another stepping stone on the way up the ladder, stocking shelves is a common starter position for inexperienced workers at box stores and grocery stores. It’s an important job, is mostly overnight but with some daytime options at certain locations, and can be very physical. You ensure the freight makes it to the shelves, is presentable, and is always available for the customer. Brands count on your skills.

Freight Unloader

Slinging boxes off a big rig might seem daunting, but once a rhythm is established, it can be kind of fun. It all starts with the unloader. They pull the freight, palletize it to move to the floor, or store it for future use. Most crews consist of as few as 2 people to as many as a dozen. During the holidays, especially at big box stores, these businesses live and die by how well you do your job. Stay hydrated because it’s a workout.

Cashier

Stores typically promote staff to cashier from within but from time to time, desperation deems it necessary to bring in fresh faces to run the register. It requires some basic math skills, a bit of charisma, and the knowledge that you are representing the store brand. If the customer doesn’t like you, it can taint the experience, leading to them never returning for future business. Not a people person? This probably isn’t the right job for you.

Housekeeper

Is your house spotless, tidy, and organized? Do you take pride in your home, your vehicle, and your appearance? Then why not get paid to do what you are already doing for yourself and are good at? Housekeeping is a growing industry as life continues to get more hectic. It is hard to balance work, family, and chores, and people will happily pay you to take the less-enjoyable of these three off their plate.

Landscaping

A clean, manicured lawn adds to curb appeal, property value and keeps the HOA at bay. It can be tricky to fit in lawn maintenance. Landscapers do what must be done with pride, efficiency, and skill, and the finished product is a thing of beauty. If you don’t mind pushing a mower, raking, weeding, and sometimes blistering heat, then this is a good choice. There is a reason kids usually pick this as a first job.

Babysitting

Child care can be tricky, but with a few instructions and a lot of patience, you can bond with a child that can forge a real relationship of trust and care. Most babysitting jobs are the same: feeding the child, taking them to the park, helping them with homework, putting them to bed, etc. There are times when situations arise, and you have to think on your feet. Be vigilant, be attentive, and treat it like a job. And have fun!

Security

It’s rare, but security companies have been known to hire inexperienced folk to be guards. These jobs are not commonly armed, are in low-risk areas, and always require a thorough background check. If you have a checkered past, disclose it immediately. Just because you did some mischief as a kid doesn’t mean your part-time potential as a guard is out of the question.

Charities

Think globally, act locally. Charity work is a wonderful professional option to give back to the community, help those in need, and still make a paycheck. Charity organizations aren’t terribly picky with their staff as long as you are trustworthy, dedicated, and have a benevolent spirit. There are a multitude of charities that always need help, both paid and volunteer, and would love to meet you.
